Taosphere has many ongoing and impending projects/divisions. Each division has educational goals apart from the goals listed below. However, each division also supports the main goals of the parent organization.
Taosphere started with a group of friends at a coffee shop who were tired of wasting their money finding things to do. It is a common story among individuals. Living expenses are outrageous and can consume half or more of one’s income. To cope with the stresses involved with working we look for recreation activities. Unfortunately, many of the things we would like to do are out of our reach financially. The result is that some of us work that much harder to one-day get the things we want while others compromise and make do with what they can.
The idea of working even harder or of compromising did not sound like fun so the friends decided to work towards having a social club that encapsulated the majority of their interests. It was realized that member interests exceeded simply recreation and that the idea of a social club was too exclusive. The concept was expanded members wanted to create a significant change in their lives but also in their community.
The key items members spent money on at the time were, coffee shops, the bar, gyms and dojos, the Internet, video games and billiards. However the members could not pursue these activities as much as they wanted to and were already spending too much money on them to begin with.
These factors created the first major goal of Taosphere, the urban learning center.
Once immediate interests had been addressed, the founding members began to consider the long-term interests of individuals. Most people have a desire for some form of retirement at the end of their careers and for the founding members retirement included vacation property. However, the founding members were impatient individuals and felt that the retirement concepts we current have are unsatisfactory. We are fortunate to live in an age of medical and lifestyle practices that encourage a longer life. We also have a retirement age of 65 and many individuals must continue to work beyond this point. This figure is 20-30 years longer than the average individual lifespan until recently.
The founding members were not afraid to work or to work hard. What they did not want to do was to work hard to make other people rich. Most of them were working full time jobs that ultimately were to buy a vacation home for someone else.
Many of the members were fighting with depression over the thought of spending 40 plus years working 40 plus hours a week so that maybe one day they could relax a little. The members wanted a place to relax and have fun in town and they also wanted a vacation property in the forest to have fun.
These factors created the second major goal of Taosphere, the rural education facility.
To achieve these goals Taosphere developed a plan and divided the major goals down to smaller more manageable goals. Those goals where then divided into divisions so that members could focus on specific areas. As time passed and Taosphere developed an internet community and found that people all over the country and the world wanted similar things.
This brought about the third major goal of Taosphere, expansion.
